Toxic Movie Review: Yash Roars, But the Story Struggles

Yash’s massive comeback Toxic delivers style, scale and swagger in abundance, but its thin storyline, stretched runtime and weak emotional core leave the film struggling to live up to its enormous hype.

Storyline

Set in Goa in 1947, Toxic follows Raya (Yash), a powerful figure involved in the illegal trade alongside his sister Ganga (Nayanthara). His life takes a complicated turn when he marries Rebecca (Tara Sutaria) but falls in love with Nadia (Kiara Advani), a circus performer, with whom he has a child.

Circumstances force Raya to leave Nadia, but years later, unexpected events bring him face-to-face with his son Ticket, also played by Yash. What happens between the father and son forms the core of the story.

Positives

Yash is undoubtedly the biggest strength of Toxic. He carries the same commanding swag and screen presence that made him a star in the KGF franchise. His dialogue delivery and attitude work well, while his performance as Ticket allows him to explore a noticeably different look and characterization.

Kiara Advani gets one of the better-written female roles in the film. Her expressive performance, particularly in emotional scenes with Yash, works well. Nayanthara delivers a restrained performance, while Huma Qureshi is adequate in her role.

The film also scores in terms of scale and visual presentation. The lavish sets, production design, action sequences and overall grandeur give Toxic a rich big-screen feel.

Negatives

The biggest weakness is the story and screenplay. The core plot is fairly simple, but the makers stretch it across a lengthy 194-minute runtime without offering enough character development or emotional progression.

The first half spends too much time on violence, intimate sequences and preachy dialogues, while the actual story moves forward at a slow pace. The second half continues the same problem with several lengthy episodes that test the audience’s patience.

The father-son conflict between Raya and Ticket had the potential to become the film’s emotional backbone, especially with Yash playing both characters. Unfortunately, the writing fails to give their relationship enough depth or emotional weight.

Despite having a huge ensemble cast, several actors are underutilized. Rukmini Vasanth, Tara Sutaria and Sudheev Nair have limited scope, while Nayanthara’s character could have been explored much better.

The dialogues frequently feel preachy, and the excessive violence and intimacy do not always contribute meaningfully to the narrative. The film also shows shades of ideas seen in other major movies without developing its own concepts strongly enough.

Technicalities

Geetu Mohandas deserves credit for attempting a story on such a grand canvas, but the direction needed tighter control. The prolonged sequences and unnecessary portions affect the pacing considerably.

Ravi Basrur’s music and background score are excessively loud in several places, often overpowering the scenes. The songs are also not particularly memorable.

Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography complements the film’s massive scale, while the production design is one of the movie’s strongest technical aspects. The lavish sets and visuals add considerable richness to the presentation.

Ujwal Kulkarni’s editing is inconsistent. Some portions are neatly handled, but several sequences desperately needed tighter cuts. The loose editing is one of the major reasons the 194-minute runtime feels unnecessarily long.

Final Verdict

Toxic is high on swag, style and spectacle but low on soul. Yash gives the film everything he can and remains its biggest attraction, but the thin storyline and overextended screenplay work against him. The emotional core never reaches the required depth, the father-son conflict lacks impact, and several characters are left underdeveloped. While Yash fans and action-film lovers may find enough to enjoy, Toxic ultimately falls short of becoming the powerful comeback it promised to be.
