SS Rajamouli’s much-anticipated Varanasi has officially locked April 7, 2027 as its theatrical release date in the United States, with overseas premieres scheduled for Tuesday, April 6, 2027. The announcement has immediately sparked discussion in trade circles, as the film’s overseas release strategy is both bold and unconventional.
Initially, expectations were that Varanasi would take advantage of Tuesday “One Plus One” ticket offers in the US market an approach that often gives a strong boost to early ticket sales. Adding to that, the spring school holidays were seen as a major advantage that could significantly drive footfalls during the opening days.
However, the final plan comes with a notable drawback. A Tuesday premiere offers no pricing benefits in most overseas territories, where weekday discount schemes are largely absent. This removes a crucial cushion that typically helps generate higher opening-day numbers. Moreover, mid-week releases are traditionally tougher to manage, with working audiences limiting show timings and premium screen availability during the crucial initial phase.
The global theatrical calendar around early April 2027 also poses a challenge. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is slated to release on March 26, and is expected to dominate IMAX screens for at least two weeks. While IMAX commitments often become flexible after the first week, the initial screen hold of a Hollywood tentpole cannot be overlooked. Adding to the competition, one Universal and one Disney release both scheduled for April 2 are yet to reveal their titles, potentially intensifying the battle for screens and audience attention.
Despite these hurdles, expectations remain extremely high. Trade analysts are confident that Varanasi will still secure a massive overseas rollout, backed by strong screen counts and packed premiere shows. Early buzz suggests the film is heading toward a record-breaking opening, with numbers that could redefine overseas benchmarks.
The true measure of Varanasi’s impact, however, will only be known once the premiere shows begin and the box office numbers start rolling in.
