Director Amit Rai has officially confirmed that Shahid Kapoor’s much-anticipated biopic on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will not go ahead. Producers Dil Raju and Wakaoo Films initially backed the project, which aimed to become a grand historical drama. However, the makers have now cancelled it, disappointing fans and leaving the director frustrated.
Amit Rai Slams Industry Practices
Amit Rai, who directed the successful film OMG 2, expressed deep frustration over the cancellation. He said in a recent interview, “The system treats us cruelly. Even after delivering a Rs 180 crore film, the industry still doesn’t consider you enough. They crush directors under the pressure of casting, production, stars, and management.”
Rai explained that he lived with the Shivaji Maharaj story for over five years. Yet, someone in the system wrote a five-page review and decided the film’s fate within minutes. This emotional experience pushed him to realise that only by becoming a producer can he protect and tell honest stories.
Actors Reject Truthful Stories, Says Amit Rai
Rai also spoke about the challenges he faced while casting. He revealed that most actors only choose roles that ensure box office success. “Very few actors gave me honest responses. When I offered a socially relevant film, they demanded a love story. But when I presented a love story, they called it too expensive or risky,” he said. He added, “They agree to work with you only after you enter their inner circle.”
Amit Rai Focuses on New Film Dharma
After facing this setback, Amit Rai has shifted his energy to a new project titled Dharma. He has decided to fund and manage the film himself. He confirmed that Pankaj Tripathi has joined the cast, and Akshay Kumar has also shown interest. Rai believes this path will finally allow him to create meaningful and truthful cinema without compromise.
Shahid Kapoor Gears Up for New Films
Shahid Kapoor has already moved forward with his next big film Arjun Ustara. Director Vishal Bhardwaj and producer Sajid Nadiadwala are helming the thriller. The film features a powerful cast that includes Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Randeep Hooda, and Vikrant Massey. Shahid also has a role in the sequel to Cocktail, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna and Kriti Sanon. He last appeared in the film Deva.
