‘Maa Nanna Superhero’ is produced by V Celluloids and CAM Entertainment. What is the film about? Is it worth a watch? Let’s find out in this review.
Telugu Funda’s reveal of the Plot:
Prakash (Sai Chand), a lorry driver by profession, is devastated when his wife passes away after giving birth to their son, Jani. A tragic turn of events leads to Prakash being wrongfully imprisoned for 20 years.
Jani (Sudheer Babu) is adopted by Srinivas (Sayaji Shinde), a kind-hearted man who is madly into stock trading. However, a series of unfortunate events cast a shadow over their relationship, leading the adoptive father to harbor resentment towards his foster son. When Srinivas faces financial ruin, he finds himself in a quandary. The rest of the film is about how this has consequences for three lives.
Telugu Funda’s take on the Performances:
- Sudheer Babu: Doesn’t show the agony inherent to his character. The average script also waters down the impact of his performance.
- Sai Chand, Sayaji Shinde: Well-done!
- Others: Aarna Vohra plays Jani’s girlfriend in a conveniently forgotten part. Raju Sundaram’s character was not required. Shashank’s character doesn’t lead to any emotional catharsis.
Telugu Funda’s take on the Positives:
Director Abhilash Kankara’s storyline is emotional enough. There is some meaning to be had from how Jani’s life intersects with the two middle-aged characters. Selfishness and other human vices are too commonplace. And what happens when such vices make an unwitting entry in relationships that are meant to be sacred?
Themes like luck, lottery and easy money are written into the script. There are echoes and patterns which come together to tell a decent climax.
Telugu Funda’s take on the Negatives:
The conversations in the film deteriorate into a certain fluffiness every time they distract the audience with detours into mundane talks. The background music by Jay Krishna keeps reminding the audience they are not supposed to take the one-trick storyline seriously. The beats of the story and the staging don’t fit even into a regular family comedy.
A particular scene in which Jani makes an unplanned but timely entry when his father is facing a threat from a motley group of punters was intended to generate a heartwarming yet massy mood. But it ends up feeling like a contrivance. The film turns into a road story for a brief while, complete with a hippie bar owner who furnishes Jani with unlimited drinks. But why? “You are the best father-son duo I have ever come across,” a character tells the Jani-father duo. But why would random characters who know nothing much about individuals make such utterances?
Believe it or not, there is a Mickey J Meyer-esque song as well; something that was not needed at all. Even a Hyper Aadhi-Kiraak RP-KA Paul comedy track would have looked less punishing despite its randomness in a story of this sort.
Telugu Funda’s Verdict:
‘Maa Nanna Superhero’ had so much potential but superficial writing bogs it down. Even so, by Telugu cinema’s drama standards, this one is decent.
