Jana Nayagan Faces Fresh Legal Hurdle Certification Process Restarts

Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell film Jana Nayagan has been entangled in legal issues for the past two weeks. On Tuesday, the matter was heard at the Madras High Court, once again bringing the film into the spotlight.

In the latest development, a division bench of the High Court set aside the earlier order passed by a single judge, which had directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A certificate to the film. The bench observed that the CBFC had not been given adequate time to present its arguments or file a counter-affidavit, terming the previous order procedurally unfair. Consequently, the case has been remitted back to the single judge for a fresh hearing.

With this ruling, the certification process has effectively begun anew, leaving Jana Nayagan uncertified for release. The CBFC had reportedly raised objections to certain scenes, citing concerns over religious sentiments and the depiction of the armed forces, following which the film was referred to the Revising Committee. The legal dispute was initiated after the makers questioned the delay in certification.

Given that Jana Nayagan is Vijay’s final film before he transitions full-time into politics with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the delay has triggered broader discussions, with many speculating on possible political factors behind the developments.

The film was initially scheduled for a Pongal release on January 9, 2026, but those plans were shelved due to the ongoing legal complications. With the case still unresolved, a pre-election release now appears uncertain. Fans have expressed disappointment, while the makers are expected to provide clarity after the next court hearing.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features Pooja Hegde as the female lead. The ensemble cast includes Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Narain, and others in pivotal roles. The film is produced by KVN Productions, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
