The re-release of Raanjhanaa, the 2013 romantic drama starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, has sparked major backlash after an AI-altered climax was included without the lead actor’s or director’s approval. The latest version changes the original tragic ending into a “happy ending,” where Dhanush’s character survives. This unexpected twist has left fans, artists, and the film’s creators shocked, and angry.
Dhanush Slams AI Re-Edit: “This Is Not the Film I Committed To”
Taking to social media, Dhanush expressed deep frustration and emotional pain over the unauthorized changes. He wrote, “The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul.”
He revealed that the creators of this altered version ignored his clear objections and moved forward with the re-release. Dhanush firmly stated, “This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago.”
The actor warned about the wider threat this sets for the film industry. “The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future,” he added.
Director Aanand L. Rai Also Voices Strong Opposition
Director Aanand L. Rai also condemned the AI-edited version, stating he was unaware of the release. He described the entire experience as “surreal and deeply upsetting.” He said, “The film was altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent. It has been nothing short of devastating.”
Rai stressed that the new climax destroys the original film’s emotional core. “To cloak a film’s emotional legacy in a synthetic cape without consent is not a creative act, it’s an abject betrayal of everything we built.”
Bollywood Comes Together Against AI Use in Films
The incident has triggered a wider debate on the use of AI in cinema. Top filmmakers and writers including Neeraj Pandey, Kabir Khan, Kanika Dhillon, Varun Grover, Renuka Shahane, and Tanuj Garg have strongly condemned the move. Many called it “unethical” and warned about the consequences of allowing machines to rewrite human stories without creative consent.
Why This Controversy Matters for the Future of Films
This controversy over Raanjhanaa’s AI-altered climax is more than just a creative disagreement, it signals a dangerous shift in how films could be handled in the future. If filmmakers and actors are left out of key decisions, and AI is used to reshape stories purely for commercial gain, the authenticity of cinema is at risk.
The film, which featured music by A.R. Rahman, was a modest hit in 2013. However, it’s the original climax, where Dhanush’s character dies, that gave it emotional depth. Now, that powerful ending has been replaced, leading to an outcry that’s shaking Bollywood.
