Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered before Tihar Jail authorities at around 4 pm on Thursday after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him relief in a long-running cheque bounce case filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd.
On Wednesday, the actor had sought an extension of time to surrender, but the High Court declined to hear his plea. Yadav’s counsel informed the court that the actor had managed to arrange ₹50 lakh and requested an additional week to clear the remaining dues. However, an amount of nearly ₹9 crore is still payable to the complainant.
The case dates back to 2018, when a magisterial court in Delhi convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife in multiple cheque bounce cases filed by the construction firm. The court sentenced the actor to six months of imprisonment. In 2019, a sessions court upheld the conviction, following which Yadav approached the Delhi High Court challenging the verdict.
During the hearings, Yadav’s counsel cited financial difficulties, stating that the crisis arose after a film produced using the borrowed funds failed at the box office. In June 2024, the High Court temporarily suspended the actor’s conviction, advising him to take “sincere and genuine measures” to amicably resolve the dispute with the complainant.
However, on February 2, the court refused to extend the deadline for repayment, noting that the actor had repeatedly violated his undertakings to repay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him by the complainant.
The court also directed that the amount already deposited with the Registrar General of the High Court be released to M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd. So far, Rajpal Yadav has deposited two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh each with the Registrar General.
