A casual remark made by Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan during his recent visit to the Godavari region has unexpectedly snowballed into a major political controversy. Kalyan’s comment that Telangana leaders frequently praise Konaseema’s greenery and that “perhaps a lot of dishti was cast on it” did not sit well with Telangana Congress leaders, even though he did not directly accuse them of harming the region’s coconut plantations.
What began as an offhand comment has now escalated into a heated political exchange. Jadcherla MLA Anirudh Reddy was one of the first to react strongly, warning Pawan Kalyan to shift from Hyderabad to Vijayawada if he loves Godavari so much. His statement was seen as an unusually harsh response to Kalyan’s seemingly innocuous comment.
Just as the controversy appeared to be dying down, it has resurfaced with sharper reactions from Telangana ministers and leaders. Telangana cabinet minister Vakiti Srihari warned that Kalyan would have to face consequences if he does not issue an immediate apology, advising him to avoid making such “loose comments” in the future. Srihari further reminded that Kalyan’s success and prominence were built using resources available in Telangana.
Adding to the tension, Telangana Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy also issued a stern warning, stating that Pawan Kalyan’s films could be banned from theatrical release in Telangana unless he apologizes. Given his position in the film-related portfolio, this warning carries significant weight.
Congress MLC Balmuri Venkat went a step further, making a provocative statement that they would “thrash” Pawan Kalyan on the roads if he does not leave Telangana and apologize immediately. He too warned that Kalyan’s films would not be allowed to release in the state.
The intensity of these reactions suggests that Kalyan’s comment has been amplified far beyond its original intent. While political disagreements are not new, the level of anger directed at what appears to be an unintentional remark seems disproportionate.
At this stage, it would be prudent for both sides to de-escalate and resolve the issue amicably. What began as a minor, casual comment is now spiraling into an avoidable conflict, and calming the situation would serve the public and political environment better.
