Before this series began, South Africa had won only one Test match in India in the last 15 years. But today, they not only created history again they walked away with the entire series in commanding fashion.
India’s performance was extremely disappointing. The team lacked even the basic technique to stay at the crease. Not a single specialist batsman managed to score a century. Unnecessary experiments, unpredictable batting order, and youngsters throwing away wickets due to over-aggression all of this resulted in a crushing defeat. After 25 years, South Africa has won a Test series on Indian soil. The last time they did so was in 2000, with a 2–0 victory. Now, they have repeated the same margin.
And this time, the result was even more humiliating. South Africa handed India the biggest defeat in its Test history. In the second Test at Guwahati, India lost by a massive 408 runs. Previously, India’s worst defeat was a 342-run loss to Australia in Nagpur in 2004. That record has now been shattered.
What Kind of Game Was This? Not Even Able to Force a Draw?
India’s downfall began right from the first Test in Kolkata, where too many experiments backfired. The team ignored specialist batter Sai Sudarshan and instead fielded four spinners. Bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar was sent in to bat at No. 3. Although he performed decently, the rest failed. To make matters worse, captain Shubman Gill was injured, didn’t bat, and was ruled out of the second Test as well. All this set the stage for a 0–2 series defeat.
Huge Target, Poor Batting
Chasing a mammoth 549-run target in Guwahati, India lost both openers on Day 4. On Wednesday morning, night-watchman Kuldeep Yadav (5 runs off 38 balls) was bowled by South African spinner Simon Harmer, who triggered the collapse. Dhruv Jurel (2) and captain Rishabh Pant (13) fell soon after, derailing India’s innings.
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (54 off 87 balls) and Sundar (16 off 44) resisted for a while, but the collapse continued.
South African spinner Harmer, who took 17 wickets in the series, was awarded Player of the Series. All-rounder Marco Jansen, who scored 93 runs and took 6 wickets in the first innings and added another wicket in the second, was named Man of the Match.
Impact on WTC Points Table
This series defeat has severely affected India’s World Test Championship (WTC) chances. South Africa, who have now won three out of four Tests (including two against Pakistan), climbed to second place. Australia remain on top with 4 out of 4 wins. India has dropped to fifth position, behind Sri Lanka (3rd) and Pakistan (4th).
