Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hoisted the saffron Dharma Dhwaj atop the 191-foot ‘shikhar’ of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, marking what he described as the fulfilment of a civilisational resolve preserved for 500 years. Addressing a large gathering after the ceremony, he said that the “wounds and pain of centuries are healing” as the Ram temple stands formally completed.
A Symbol of a 500-Year Aspiration
The Dharma Dhwaj ten feet high and twenty feet long features the radiant Sun symbolising Lord Ram’s Surya Vansh, the sacred ‘Om’, and the Kovidara tree, revered as the state tree of Ram Rajya. The flag now crowns the shikhar designed in the traditional North Indian Nagara architectural style, while the temple’s 800-metre Parkota draws inspiration from South Indian traditions.
Speaking after the hoisting, PM Modi said the event signified the triumph of truth over falsehood and congratulated countless devotees and contributors who helped bring the temple to completion. He said, “History has been made in Ayodhya.”
‘Awaken the Ram Within Ourselves’
The Prime Minister urged citizens to embrace values embodied by Lord Ram if India is to achieve the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. “We attained independence, but we could not free ourselves from the sense of inferiority,” he said. “India is the mother of democracy. Democracy is in our DNA.”
He added that the sacred flag will stand as a reminder of India’s spiritual resilience and cultural continuity.
Completion of Ram Mandir
The installation of the triangular Dharma Dhwaj marks the final step in the formal completion of the Ram Mandir, following the consecration of Ram Lalla in the garbhagriha in January 2024. The ceremony, steeped in symbolism and tradition, drew emotional responses from devotees across the country and reaffirmed Ayodhya’s enduring significance in India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
