Car Explosion Near Delhi’s Red Fort: 8 Dead, 24 Injured; CNG Cylinder Suspected

A massive explosion near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort has shocked the nation. The blast, which occurred on Monday evening near Gate No. 1 of the Lal Qila (Red Fort) Metro Station, resulted in the deaths of eight people and left 24 others injured. The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

According to preliminary reports, the explosion is suspected to have been caused by a CNG cylinder blast inside a parked car. However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the explosion. The incident led to a huge fire that quickly spread to nearby vehicles, causing panic in the area. Delhi Police have declared a high alert across the city following the explosion.

The Delhi Fire Department received the first call about the explosion at around 6:56 PM. Officials said that within minutes, the fire spread to three or four nearby vehicles. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control after intense efforts.

There are also suspicions that the blast could have been triggered remotely, as investigators are probing whether any explosive materials were planted in the car. The area has been completely cordoned off, and forensic teams are examining the scene to determine the exact cause.

A senior Delhi Fire Services official told the media, “We received a call about a car explosion near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station around 6:56 PM. Nearby vehicles were also damaged. The situation is now under control, and we are investigating the source of the explosion.”

The explosion caused extensive damage to several vehicles parked in the vicinity. Eyewitnesses said flames shot up suddenly, creating chaos among commuters and local residents. Fortunately, since Mondays are holidays for major tourist spots and markets in Delhi, officials believe the casualty count was lower than it could have been.

Traffic movement on Netaji Subhash Marg and surrounding areas was briefly disrupted but has since been restored under police supervision. Authorities are investigating all possible angles — whether it was a mechanical failure, an accidental fire, or a deliberate act.

Delhi Police and Fire Services officials are expected to release a detailed report soon, which may clarify the exact cause of the deadly explosion.
