The impact of Cyclone Montha has officially begun in Telangana, with several districts experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall since Wednesday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple regions, warning of intense downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next 48 hours.
Widespread Rainfall Across the State
Districts including Khammam, Nalgonda, Warangal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Suryapet, and Mahabubabad have already recorded moderate to heavy rainfall. Low-lying areas in these regions are reporting waterlogging, while streams and small reservoirs are swelling due to continuous showers.
In Hyderabad, intermittent rain accompanied by strong winds has disrupted normal life. Traffic congestion, fallen trees, and power outages were reported in parts of Madhapur, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, and Dilsukhnagar.
IMD Issues Alert
According to IMD Hyderabad, the outer bands of Cyclone Montha, currently active over the Bay of Bengal, have moved inland, triggering moisture-laden clouds over Telangana.
“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in eastern and northern districts for the next two days. Winds may reach speeds of 40–60 km/h in isolated areas,” officials stated.
The system is likely to weaken gradually into a deep depression as it moves northwest toward Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.
Authorities on High Alert
The Telangana State Disaster Management Authority (TSDMA) has directed district collectors to remain vigilant and monitor flood-prone zones. Control rooms have been set up in all affected districts.
Educational institutions in a few areas, including Bhadrachalam and Kothagudem, have declared a precautionary holiday.
