Why Ashwin Kumar Turned Mahavatar Narasimha Into an Animated Film Without Actors?

By TeluguFunda / August 1, 2025

In a time when big stars dominate the silver screen, Ashwin Kumar surprised everyone by making Mahavatar Narasimha as an animated film without any actors. The film, which released last week, has already created a strong buzz in the Telugu box office by earning over Rs 3 crore in just five days. But why did Ashwin skip casting popular stars? The director recently revealed the bold reasons behind his decision.

Why Mahavatar Has No Star Actors: Ashwin Kumar Speaks Out

Ashwin Kumar, who leads the ambitious Mahavatar cinematic universe based on Lord Vishnu’s Dasavatars, explained that casting big stars forces filmmakers to make compromises. He said that when filmmakers bring top actors on board, they must alter the script to suit the actor’s image. These changes usually include unnecessary action scenes, hero elevation moments, and even romantic tracks, just to satisfy fans. “That kills the soul of devotional cinema,” Ashwin said.

So, he chose animation. Ashwin believes that animation gives the team complete freedom to follow the story without interference from actors or fan demands. This choice helps the film stay true to its spiritual essence and avoids unwanted commercial distractions.

Ashwin also noted that top actors can’t commit to long-term projects. “I’m not Rajamouli. No actor will give me five years of call sheets,” he said honestly.

Who He Would Have Cast-If He Had Chosen Actors

Ashwin revealed that if he had gone with a live-action version, he would have considered Rana Daggubati, Mohanlal, or Vijay Sethupathi to play the demon king Hiranyakashyapa. But when it came to Lord Narasimha’s role, he couldn’t find any actor who matched the divine nature of the character. “Some characters are beyond human portrayal,” he said.

Box Office Surprise: Mahavatar Narasimha Wins Over Telugu Audience

The team originally made Mahavatar Narasimha in Kannada, and later dubbed it into Telugu. Now, the Telugu version is beating commercial releases like Hari Hara Veera Mallu in collections. Family audiences and spiritual movie lovers continue to fill theatres, helping the film perform better every day. Based on current trends, the film might reach ₹8 crore by the end of its theatrical run.

Geetha Arts handled the Telugu distribution, and audiences have praised the film for its sincere storytelling and impactful visuals. Without relying on any formula, this unique animated devotional story has become a sleeper hit. Ashwin’s approach has proven that content-focused films can still connect with audiences deeply.

What’s Next in the Mahavatar Universe

The success of Mahavatar Narasimha marks only the beginning of Ashwin’s vision. He, along with Hombale Films and Kleem Productions, has already planned the complete lineup of upcoming animated devotional films:

Mahavatar Parshuram (2027)

Mahavatar Raghunandan (2029)

Mahavatar Dhawkadhesh (2031)

Mahavatar Gokulananda (2033)

Mahavatar Kalki Part 1 (2035) and Part 2 (2037)

They will continue to make these films in animated format, following Ashwin’s idea of preserving devotion over adding commercial drama.
