India’s star badminton couple, Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap, have announced their divorce after nearly seven years of marriage. The news surprised many fans and followers of the sport, especially considering their long-standing personal and professional bond. Saina shared the separation news on her Instagram story, stating that they are choosing “peace, growth, and healing” for both themselves and each other.

Saina Nehwal Shares Statement on Divorce

On Sunday, Saina Nehwal posted a heartfelt note to her followers:
“Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap and I have decided to part ways. We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing—for ourselves and each other. I’m grateful for all the memories and wish him nothing but the best.”

While Parupalli Kashyap hasn’t made a public statement yet, he shared a story from the Awakenings Festival in the Netherlands, which indicates that he currently feels relaxed and content.

They Built Their Bond on the Badminton Court

Saina and Kashyap began their journey on the badminton courts of the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad. They trained together and eventually fell in love. They got married in December 2018, becoming one of India’s most admired sports couples.

Throughout their careers, both athletes achieved remarkable milestones. Saina Nehwal earned a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and reached world No. 1 in 2015, becoming the first Indian woman to do so in badminton. Parupalli Kashyap clinched a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and maintained consistent international performances. After retiring from competitive play, he stepped into coaching and guided Saina through the later stages of her career.

Saina Opens Up About Health and Her Future

In 2024, Saina revealed that she battles arthritis in her knee and struggles with training. On Gagan Narang’s House of Glory podcast, she said,
“I can’t push for eight or nine hours anymore. Even two hours of training doesn’t feel enough to compete with top players.”
Although she hasn’t announced her retirement, her future in professional badminton remains uncertain. She last competed on the circuit in June 2023.
