Hyderabad’s Sandhya 70MM Theatre risks losing its cinema license following a tragic incident during the premiere of Pushpa 2 on December 4, 2024. A stampede occurred at the theatre, resulting in the death of Mogudampalli Revathi (35) and injuries to her son, Sri Tej, aged around 9 years. In response, the Hyderabad Police issued a Show Cause Notice to the theatre’s management.

Details of the Show Cause Notice

On December 4, a large crowd gathered at Sandhya 70MM Theatre, eager to catch a glimpse of the movie stars. Actor Allu Arjun, along with his family and the lead actress, arrived unexpectedly, causing chaos as fans rushed to see them. The actor’s private security team began pushing people, worsening the situation. This led to overcrowding and suffocation inside the theatre. Despite efforts from police, Revathi tragically died, and her son was seriously injured. He was transferred to KIM’s Hospital in Secunderabad.

Lapses Noticed by Authorities

The police identified several security and management failures:

1. Lack of Proper Crowd Control: The theatre had no additional security arrangements or separate entry/exit plans for the actor’s team, causing uncontrollable crowds.

2. No Information Given to Police: The theatre management failed to inform local police about the actor’s visit or plan for crowd management.

3. Overcrowding and Ticket Checks: The theatre did not check tickets, allowing unauthorized people to enter, which led to overcrowding and suffocation.

4. Poor Infrastructure: The entry gate could not handle the crowd and was damaged in the rush.

5. Inadequate Security Measures: There was no proper frisking of individuals, and security staff failed to control the crowd at the main gates.

Serious Consequences

Due to these failures, the Hyderabad Police issued a notice to Renuka Devi, the theatre’s owner, demanding an explanation for failing to maintain a safe environment. If the explanation is unsatisfactory, the police may revoke the cinema’s license.

The theatre has been given 10 days to respond to the notice. If it does not respond, further actions will follow.
