Unspooling too soon: ‘Family Star’, ‘Gangs Of Godavari’, ‘Krishnamma’

Telugu cinema faces a potential challenge with the rapid shift of films to OTT platforms. Vijay Deverakonda’s ‘Family Star’ landed on Amazon Prime Video after just three weeks in theaters, a clear sign it had underperformed. Similarly, ‘Krishnamma’ starring Satyadev reached Prime Video within a week, indicating a lack of theatrical traction.

The latest case is ‘Gangs of Godavari’, set to stream on Netflix just two weeks after its theatrical release on May 31st. The OTT date is June 14th.

This trend of films arriving on OTT within two to three weeks suggests a potential self-destructive path for Telugu cinema.

Audiences are hesitant to spend money on mediocre movies in theaters. While the initial two weeks often see enthusiastic young viewers supporting new releases, this trend might discourage them from venturing out if films become readily available on OTT platforms so quickly.
