Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga has strongly responded to criticism of his film Animal, particularly remarks made by Vikas Divyakirti, a well-known UPSC professor and former IAS officer. Addressing the backlash, Vanga stated that cracking the IAS exam is easier than becoming a filmmaker or writer because there is a structured way to prepare for it, unlike filmmaking.
During an interview on the Game Changers Podcast, Vanga expressed frustration over the way some people have criticized Animal. He pointed out that while many social issues are ignored, his film was analyzed and debated for hours. Referring to Vikas Divyakirti’s comments, he said the criticism made him feel as if he had committed a crime.
Vikas Divyakirti’s Criticism of Animal
Vikas Divyakirti, who appeared as himself in the 2023 film 12th Fail, had earlier criticized Animal, stating that such movies “take society back by ten years.” In an interview with Neelesh Misra, he argued that films should have social value rather than just focus on financial success. He questioned whether filmmakers were working only for profit without considering their responsibility toward society.
Sandeep Vanga’s Response to Divyakirti
Vanga strongly disagreed with Divyakirti’s views. He explained that becoming an IAS officer has a clear path, one can study at an institute, follow a syllabus, and pass the exam with dedication. However, filmmaking and writing cannot be taught in a structured way. There is no fixed syllabus or coaching center that guarantees success in cinema.
He admitted that such harsh criticism initially affected him, but over time, he has learned to move past it. He also recalled how, in his childhood, his father believed that with enough focus and hard work, he could have cleared competitive exams. However, Vanga chose filmmaking, a field that demands creativity, experience, and passion rather than just academic preparation.
Animal’s Success Despite Controversy
Despite facing backlash for glorifying toxic masculinity and violence, Animal became a box-office hit. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Triptii Dimri, received mixed reviews but performed exceptionally well commercially.
Vanga remains confident in his vision and is now focused on his next project, Animal Park, which is expected to be even bigger. With ongoing debates about his filmmaking style, it remains to be seen if his next film will spark similar controversy.
