Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Animal’s Criticism: ‘They Praise Ranbir Because They Want to Work With Him’

Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga recently addressed the criticism surrounding his movie Animal. He pointed out a clear contrast—while actor Ranbir Kapoor received universal praise for his performance, Vanga himself was heavily criticized for his direction.

Why Only the Director Got Criticized?

In a promo for his upcoming interview on Game Changers, Vanga shared his views on this disparity. He noted that the same people who harshly criticized the film praised Ranbir’s performance, making him question their intentions.

“People who criticized very badly, film-related people, everybody said Ranbir was brilliant. I am not jealous of Ranbir, but the point is—‘Ranbir was brilliant, but the writer-director was…’ I don’t understand the disparity,” he said.

According to Vanga, this bias exists because people in the industry want to work with Ranbir. “If they say anything against him, it could affect their chances of collaborating with him in the future,” he explained.

Ranbir’s Popularity Shields Him from Criticism

Vanga further elaborated on why actors often escape criticism. He noted that while a filmmaker makes a movie once every 2-3 years, an actor appears in multiple films within the same period. This frequency makes actors more valuable for collaborations, leading critics to target directors instead of actors.

“A filmmaker will make a film in 2-3 years, but an actor will appear five times. So the one with whom you can work more, you won’t say anything about him. That’s true,” he added.

Ranbir Kapoor Confirms Double Role in Animal Sequel

Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor confirmed exciting news about Animal’s sequel. Speaking to Deadline, he revealed that he would play a double role in the second part, titled Animal Park.

“Sandeep wants to make it over three parts. The second part is called Animal Park. We’ve been sharing ideas since the first film itself. Now, I get to play two characters—the antagonist and the protagonist,” he said.

Animal’s Success and Controversy

Despite facing criticism for graphic violence and toxic masculinity, Animal became a box office sensation, grossing over ₹500 crore in India. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol and is currently streaming on Netflix.

Vanga had previously faced similar backlash for Kabir Singh (2019), which was also accused of promoting misogyny and toxic relationships. However, like Animal, it was a major commercial success.
