Nepal Flash Floods Trigger Panic: 291 Foreign Nationals Reported Missing

A sudden and devastating flash flood in Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border has left hundreds of people missing, including more than 100 Indian nationals. The disaster occurred after the Bhote Koshi River suddenly overflowed, sweeping away villages, bridges, border markets and critical infrastructure.

Massive Flash Flood Triggers Widespread Destruction

According to reports, the flash flood struck northern Nepal’s Rasuwa district without warning, causing extensive destruction along the Tibetan border. Several settlements were severely affected, while bridges, roads, border markets and hydroelectric infrastructure were damaged or washed away.

The sudden surge of water also left several people dead and many others stranded in the affected areas. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway as authorities continue to assess the scale of the destruction.

More Than 100 Indian Travellers Reported Missing

A large number of those reported missing are believed to be Indian nationals who had travelled to Nepal, including pilgrims visiting the popular Kailash Manasarovar route. The disaster has raised serious concerns over the safety of Indian travellers in the region.

The Nepal Tourism Board has reportedly compiled information received from various tourism operators and stated that 291 foreign nationals were among those reported missing. Indians reportedly constitute the largest group of missing foreign travellers.

Citizens from countries including the United Kingdom, Malaysia, the United States, Australia and South Africa are also among those reported missing.

Death Toll and Missing Persons Continue to Rise

Media reports indicate that at least nine people have died so far, while hundreds remain unaccounted for. Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations, with the final number of casualties and missing persons expected to become clearer as communication and access to affected areas improve.

Dramatic visuals showing the force of the floodwaters and the destruction across the region have also emerged on social media, highlighting the severity of the disaster.

High Alert Issued in Downstream Areas

The floodwaters have reportedly moved downstream through the Trishuli and Kosi river systems, prompting authorities to issue high alerts in several downstream areas of Nepal. Border districts in Bihar, India, have also been placed on alert amid concerns over rising water levels.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating rescue efforts as teams work to locate missing people and provide assistance to those stranded by the devastating floods.
