Mad Square Movie, Mad Square Movie Review

Mad Square, produced by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, is currently playing in theatres. Find out what the movie has in store!

Telugu Funda’s reveal of the plot:

DD, Ashok, and Manoj reunite at their college friend Laddu’s wedding, three years after graduating, eager for a good time. Overflowing with childish excitement, the trio showers the anxious groom-to-be, Laddu, with affection as he prepares to say his vows. But when the bride throws an unexpected curveball, Laddu is left embarrassed. To lift his spirits, his three pals whisk him away on a spontaneous trip to Goa. Their adventure takes a wild turn when they encounter a goofy cop (Satyam Rajesh) and an even quirkier gangster (Sunil).

Telugu Funda’s take on the Performances:

  1. The Best: Sangeeth Sobhan is easily the film’s best performer. Among the lead men, the second best is Vishnu Oi. Although he doesn’t come across as so original as in the first part, he is still funny.
  2. The Average: Ram Nitin and Narne Nithiin are just average.
  3. The Bad Guys: Comedian Sunil is the one who has played the suspenseful Bhai. He is decent. Subhalekha Sudhakar plays a bad guy who doesn’t intend ill-will.
  4. The Cops: Satyam Rajesh and Auto Ramprasad are fun to watch.
  5. The Womenfolk: Priyanka Jawalkar has a few scenes. Reba Monica of Samajavaragamana fame is below-par in the song, Swathi Reddy.
  6. Others: Muralidhar Goud is fun to watch here and there. The rest of the cast play their parts well. Raghu Babu plays a resort owner who has previously been a College principal. The character Anthony from MAD is back.

Telugu Funda’s take on the Technical Output:

Thaman’s background score merges itself with the additional score composed by Bheems Ceciroleo. The songs should have worked better on the big screen. This is relatively a turn-off compared to the quality of visualization in MAD, released in 2023. The cinematography is average.

Overall, the production values are decent. The makers haven’t slurged anywhere just because this is a sequel to a hit movie. The cost-conscious staging shows.

Telugu Funda’s Analysis:

Three years after their graduation, the four friends are good for nothing. Manoj’s claim to fame at the bar where he works is that he narrates his sob stories well. DD wants to become a Sarpanch and while away his productive age. Ashok is fighting a property litigation. Laddu has been shamed into marriage by society.

Director Kalyan Shankar goes for crazy ideas. Laddus’ online ‘pelli choopulu’ falls apart after his potential bride discovers that he is a rank liar. There is humour around a dead body. The term ‘joint family’ is used as a pun on joints. There are kids who play risky games without a trace of fear. There is a stolen artifact that gets robbed just like that. The film is a parody of heist thrillers on one level.

The song ‘Happy ga jolly ga enjoy chey ra’ plays as a ringtone on the most inappropriate occasion. A middle-aged character pines for his dose of the Protein shake even when he has been kidnapped. There is a mental hospital nicknamed as the Goa Erragadda. The negative characters are so inept that they don’t mind saying one-liners like this one: “Veellani champesina kasi theeradu. Anduke vadilesanu”.

All said and done, the shelf life of this film is likely going to be less than that of MAD, while the commercial success could be bigger by virtue of the movie being a sequel. The crime comedy segments could have been planned in a better way.

Telugu Funda’s Verdict:

MAD Square delivers a dose of wacky humor and bizarre scenarios, but ultimately fails to recapture the magic of its predecessor. While Sangeeth Sobhan shines, and the supporting cast provides some laughs, the film makes for a decent watch and nothing more.
