The film industry across India is currently going through a difficult phase, regardless of language. In particular, the condition of the Telugu film industry has become increasingly worrying. While the industry proudly talks about reaching the pan-India level, the reality tells a different story. Box office collections have fallen sharply, and bringing audiences back to theatres has become a major challenge. At the same time, digital rights prices have also dropped significantly.
With theatrical shares decreasing, producers are reportedly facing severe financial pressure. Many viewers also feel that filmmakers are failing to deliver quality content and are instead relying on promotional gimmicks. Though movies are being heavily marketed, audiences who visit theatres often leave disappointed due to weak content, which is gradually reducing their interest in watching films on the big screen. However, very few people from the industry are openly discussing these realities.
At the teaser launch event of the small film “Summer Holidays,” “Baby” director-producer Sai Rajesh spoke candidly about the current situation in the industry. He admitted that filmmakers themselves are contributing to the trust deficit among audiences.
Sai Rajesh revealed that the industry has been artificially buying YouTube views, likes, and comments for promotional content. He also said that negative comments on social media are often manipulated into positive ones. Because of this, audiences are unable to distinguish between what is genuine and what is fake, leading them to gradually lose trust in filmmakers and avoid theatres altogether.
His comments are receiving positive reactions on social media, with many appreciating his honesty in admitting the industry’s mistakes. Several people believe his statements should serve as a wake-up call for the entire film industry.
Meanwhile, producer Dil Raju also made strong remarks at the same event, stating that the industry is currently going through a “bad phase” and that conditions are extremely difficult. He added that he has no fear in openly speaking about the crisis facing Telugu cinema.
