The ongoing “percentage system” issue in the Telugu film industry has once again brought the relationship between Tollywood and the Andhra Pradesh government into discussion. Recently, a group of active Tollywood producers including Ravi Shankar, Naga Vamsi, Sahu Garapati, Sudhakar Cherukuri, and Satish Kilaru met Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan to discuss the issue and seek support.
This is not the first time producers have approached Pawan Kalyan regarding industry concerns. During the controversy surrounding Hari Hara Veera Mallu, the actor-politician strongly reacted through a press statement, alleging that some forces were targeting his film. Soon after his intervention, the situation reportedly settled down. Producers now appear hopeful that Pawan will once again help resolve the current tensions.
Interestingly, while producers have met Pawan Kalyan twice during this government’s tenure, they have not met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu even once in the last two years. At the same time, industry representatives did meet Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy after his government announced strict measures on ticket price hikes and benefit shows following the Sandhya theatre stampede controversy.
The apparent reason behind not meeting Chandrababu Naidu is simple the industry does not feel pressured to approach him for approvals. Unlike the previous government led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, where ticket hikes and permissions allegedly became sensitive negotiation points, the current administration is seen as functioning smoothly and without unnecessary hurdles.
Under the Naidu government, approvals for premieres and ticket hikes are reportedly being granted in a streamlined manner once applications are submitted. As a result, many in the industry feel there is no urgent necessity to lobby or personally meet the Chief Minister for such matters.
However, many believe that beyond business needs, the film industry should maintain cordial relations with governments that support it. Industry insiders feel it would be a good gesture for leading producers and film personalities to meet Chandrababu Naidu formally, especially with Pawan Kalyan’s support, to strengthen ties and create a healthier atmosphere between Tollywood and the AP government.
There were earlier plans for such a meeting after the elections, but they were reportedly cancelled at the last minute. Now, with industry issues resurfacing again, many feel the time may finally be right for Tollywood’s top brass to initiate that long-pending courtesy meeting.
