The tragic Sandhya 70mm theatre stampede has taken new turns, with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) now stepping in. The incident occurred during the premiere of Pushpa 2 in Hyderabad, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Revathi and injuries to her son. As the investigation progresses, actor Allu Arjun awaits his next court hearing for bail.

NHRC Demands Detailed Report

The NHRC has issued a notice to the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) and Hyderabad Police Commissioner. They have been asked to submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks. The NHRC’s directive follows a complaint filed by advocate Rama Rao Immaneni.

The complaint accuses the police of failing to handle the crowd properly and using lathi charges, which allegedly worsened the situation. The NHRC emphasized the need for a senior-ranking officer to lead a thorough inquiry. The Commission also pointed out the absence of a functional Telangana State Human Rights Commission, highlighting the urgency of accountability.

Allegations Against Police

The crowd had gathered to see actor Allu Arjun at the Pushpa 2 premiere. Inadequate crowd control measures led to a stampede, resulting in chaos. Revathi tragically lost her life, while two children, including her son, were injured. The complainant alleges the police did not take appropriate precautions, despite being informed of Allu Arjun’s arrival.

The NHRC has called for clarity on the role of the police and instructed them to take corrective actions. The findings must be included in the upcoming ATR.

Relief for Pushpa 2 Producers

Meanwhile, the Telangana High Court has barred the police from arresting Pushpa 2 producers, Yalamanchili Ravi Shankar and Yerneni Naveen, who had been named in the case. The producers argued they had informed the police and theatre management about Allu Arjun’s visit, and senior officers had inspected the venue beforehand.

Justice K. Sujana issued an interim order, directing the producers to cooperate with the investigation while restraining the police from making arrests. The court has asked the police and complainants to respond with a counter affidavit.

Ongoing Case

The stampede at Sandhya 70mm has brought attention to event management and public safety during high-profile premieres. With the NHRC’s involvement, there is hope for a transparent investigation and accountability. All eyes are now on the upcoming court hearings and the police’s response to the NHRC notice.
