Telugu Funda Review: ‘Annapoorani’ in Telugu

Annapurni Lead by Tamil Leading actress Nayanatara, shrugged off its Tamil Theatrical run and entered in the OTT space streaming in multiple languages.

Plot

Hailing from a Brahmin family, a determined woman aspires to become the nation’s top chef. However, achieving her culinary dream requires mastering non-vegetarian dishes, a choice that challenges her orthodox family’s traditions and principles. The movie is streamed on Netflix for Telugu Audience in telugu for better viewing.

The film kicks off by showcasing the extraordinary culinary prowess of its protagonist, Annapoorani (Nayanthara), who possesses an exceptional palate from birth. Her father, Rangarajan (Achyuth Kumar), devout to Lord Ranganathar, serves divine meals rather than pursuing a railway job. This encourages Annapurni to get interested in cooking and consequently dreamt of becoming World’s best chef.

Consequently, Annapoorani faces resistance when she pursues her culinary aspirations—can a family dedicated to serving the divine prepare ‘impure’ non-vegetarian cuisine?

Performances

Nayan is at her usual best in Annapurni and aced her character as a strong individual woman among the traditional family and choosing a path breaking way.

Rangarajan (Achyuth Kumar) gave a well supporting role and had a good screen presence as Nayan’s father.

Sathyaraj (Chef Anand), a celebrated culinary figure who serves as Annapoorani’s inspiration and guiding mentor. Notably, he revisits a memorable moment from his previous work, “Amaidhi Padai,”. Satyaraj has played such characters multiple times and is a piece of cake to him.

Jai (Farhan), a childhood friend and lover of Annapoorani, plays the second fiddle to Nayanthara in the same entertaining way as he did in Raja Rani played the character with ease.

Other cast members were well fitted in their respective roles.

Technical Aspects

Director Nilesh Krishnaa presents this narrative with broad strokes, creating an agreeable cinematic experience. It embodies the essence of a feel-good, inspirational drama—a familiar yet satisfying tale.

Surprisingly, for a film centered on gastronomy, it lacks compelling visuals of food or the cooking process.

Cinematography by Dinesh Krishnan and Satyan Sooryan is impressive.

Music by S S Thaman is adequate.

Telugu Funda Verdict

The film unfolds in distinct halves—pre and post-intermission. The initial segment focuses on the protagonist’s struggle within her orthodox family, while the latter explores her passion for cooking, particularly after an event strips her of her gift. She then strives to prove herself on a reality show akin to MasterChef. The director employs animated segments depicting the challenges faced by the protagonist, a simplistic yet somewhat excessive approach—much like the film’s attempts at advocating religious harmony, accompanied by Thaman’s pervasive background score.

Despite its predictable elements, the film’s inspirational essence keeps viewers engaged, aided by entertaining sequences. Particularly impactful are scenes depicting increased female participation in education and professional kitchens, riding on Annapoorani’s accomplishments, leaving audiences uplifted and motivated.
