Mithun Chakraborty, the actor, producer, and politician, mainly known for his work in Hindi and Bengali cinema, has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, a national award handed over by the Indian government. He will be conferred with the award soon.
Mithun, who debuted in ‘Mrigayaa’ (1976) and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his debut, shot to fame with his role in ‘Disco Dancer’ (1982). The film catapulted him to fame, becoming a hit even in the Soviet Union.
A recipient of three National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award a few years ago. He also holds a record in the Limca Book of Records for 19 movie releases as a lead actor in 1989, an unbroken record in Bollywood.
On the business front, Mithun Chakraborty owns the Monarch Group, with interests in hospitality and education. He also founded Paparatzy Productions and co-established CINTAA to support struggling actors. He served as Chairperson of Film Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union, which advocates for cinema workers’ rights. In politics, he played a key mediating role in the 2012 Indian presidential election, and was a member of the Rajya Sabha and joined the BJP in 2021.
Mithun’s first reaction:
“I dedicate this award to my family and all my fans around the world. Where I come from, from a blind alley in Kolkata, I never imagined that a boy from the footpath could receive such a big honour,” he has been quoted as saying by a news agency. “I am literally dumbfounded. Trust me, I can neither smile nor cry from happiness because a man from literally nowhere, a nobody, has made it. This proves what I always tell my fans and those who aren’t financially strong: if I can make it, then you can too,” he added.
