Telangana Minister Konda Surekha appeared before the Nampally Special Court today in a criminal defamation case filed by actor Akkineni Nagarjuna. The case stems from her controversial remarks about the divorce of Nagarjuna’s son, Naga Chaitanya, and Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
During a past political speech, Konda Surekha accused BRS leader KTR of influencing the couple’s separation. While criticizing KTR, she also made allegations against Nagarjuna’s family, which sparked outrage. In response, both Nagarjuna and KTR filed separate defamation lawsuits against her.
Nagarjuna Demands Legal Action
Nagarjuna stated in his petition that Konda Surekha’s remarks deeply hurt his family’s reputation. He emphasized that he has been a respected figure in the film industry for decades, and such allegations damaged their dignity. His legal team demanded criminal action against the minister.
His lawyer, Ashok Reddy, presented arguments in court, highlighting that Konda Surekha’s comments were widely covered by the media. He pointed out that she later posted an apology on Twitter but only addressed Samantha, ignoring Nagarjuna’s family. The lawyer argued that such irresponsible statements from a minister were unacceptable.
Konda Surekha Faces Legal Consequences
Nagarjuna confirmed in an interview with Zoom that he filed a criminal defamation case against Konda Surekha. Additionally, he is preparing to file a Rs 100-crore civil defamation lawsuit.
He firmly stated that her apology to Samantha was not enough. She must also apologize to his family, but even then, he will not withdraw the lawsuits. According to him, this is not just a personal issue anymore, it is about stopping politicians from using film industry names for political gains.
Legal Battle Could Take Years
Nagarjuna acknowledged that defamation cases in India take years to resolve. However, he remains committed to fighting till the end. He hopes for a speedy verdict but is prepared for a long legal battle.
He also mentioned that this year has been challenging for him, with multiple problems arising. However, he expressed confidence that the entire Telugu film industry stands with him. He believes this support comes from the goodwill of his late father, Akkineni Nageswara Rao.
This case highlights how celebrities are pushing back against false accusations, setting a precedent against misuse of their names for political agendas.
