Indian athletics witnessed a landmark moment as Gurindervir Singh became the fastest Indian ever in the men’s 100m, clocking a sensational 10.09 seconds at the National Senior Federation Competition held at Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium.
The competition turned into a thrilling showdown between India’s top sprinters, with the national record being rewritten three times within 24 hours. Animesh Kujur had entered the event as the favourite after previously holding the national mark of 10.18 seconds.
Gurindervir first grabbed attention by clocking 10.17 seconds in the semifinal heats to briefly set a new national record. Soon after, Animesh responded with a stunning 10.15-second run to reclaim the top spot.
However, the final belonged entirely to Gurindervir.
Representing Reliance Foundation, the Punjab sprinter produced a breathtaking run of 10.09 seconds, becoming the first Indian athlete to break the 10.1-second barrier in the men’s 100m. Animesh finished second, while Pranav Gurav secured third place with a timing of 10.29 seconds.
Gurindervir’s remarkable performance also helped him cross the qualification mark for the 2026 Commonwealth Games set by the Athletics Federation of India. His 10.09-second effort currently stands as the second-fastest time in Asia this season, behind Japanese sprinter Fukuto Komuro.
The championships delivered another historic moment in the men’s 400m event as Vishal TK became the first Indian to run below 45 seconds. The Tamil Nadu athlete clocked an outstanding 44.98 seconds, bettering his previous national record of 45.12 seconds.
Vishal’s performance also placed him at the top of the Asian season rankings. Fellow runner Rajesh Ramesh finished second with 45.31 seconds, while Jay Kumar claimed third place in 45.47 seconds.
The National Senior Federation Competition will be remembered as a defining chapter in Indian athletics, with a new generation of sprinters rewriting history and making a strong statement on the Asian stage.
