India’s struggles against New Zealand continued, even on home soil, as the hosts suffered a disappointing defeat in the third and final ODI. It turned out to be a humiliating night for India, with the visiting side clinching the match and sealing the series 2-1.
Batting first, New Zealand put up an imposing total of 338 runs, setting India a daunting target in the series decider. In reply, India’s chase got off to a poor start as openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were dismissed cheaply. The middle order failed to stabilize the innings, with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul also unable to make meaningful contributions.
Just when the chase seemed to be slipping away, Virat Kohli rose to the occasion once again. He found valuable support from Nitish Kumar Reddy, and the duo stitched together a crucial century partnership to revive India’s hopes. Kohli then added another significant stand with Harshit Rana, briefly swinging the momentum back in India’s favor.
However, New Zealand struck at the right moments, removing Harshit Rana and soon after dismissing Kohli, which effectively ended India’s chances. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 296, falling short by 41 runs.
Virat Kohli was the standout performer for India, playing a magnificent knock of 124 runs and once again proving his class under pressure. Despite his heroic effort, India could not chase down the stiff target set by New Zealand.
This defeat compounds India’s misery against the Kiwis, coming on the back of a Test series whitewash earlier. Losing the ODI series at home makes it one of India’s most disappointing results in the format in recent years and underlines New Zealand’s growing dominance over them.
