Good Bad Ugly Review : Watchable with low expectations

Telugu Funda’s reveal of the Plot:

The most adroit gangster of them all, AK (Ajith Kumar), tosses his shady shenanigans out the window for his dazzling dame, Ramya (Trisha Krishnan). He waltzes right into the prison, hands up, ready to trade his pinstripes for prison stripes. But—plot twist!—his old ghosts are not done with him yet, even after he has gone all straight-and-narrow. When his son Vihaan (Karthikeya Dev) stumbles into a heaping mess of trouble, the old gangster juice in AK’s veins starts bubbling up, and he grabs the reins like a cowboy on a runaway stallion. This has uncereminous conequences for his rivals.

Telugu Funda’s take on the Performances:

  1. Ajith: He is absolutely delightful to watch. The Tamil superstar was routine in films like Viswasam and Vidaamuyaarchi. In Good Bad Ugly, he unleashes his inner performer. While his performance will draw the maximum whistles in his forte (Tamil Nadu), the Telugu audience might give a lukewarm response, though. The narration lacks the thunder for the Telugu viewer.
  2. The ladies: Trisha Krishnan looks too skinny. Simran hams in her first scene but is otherwise good in her special appearance. Priya Prakash Varrier’s character holds a surprise. We are done with the ladies, coz this is a male-dominated gangster flick.
  3. The baddies: Arjun Das is okay in a dual role. Jackie Shroff as Babel is unrecognizable. Tinnu Anand as Mastaan Bhai is good. Shine Tom Chacko as Shanmuga aka Simon is forgettable. Raghu Ram is mechanical.
  4. The supporting artists: Prabhu and Prasanna play roles with no life in them. Sunil as AK’s aide gets to play a visible character that has no much consequence to the story. Karthikeya Dev, most recently seen in L2: Empuraan, is turning out to be a reliable child artist.
  5. The comedian: Redin Kingsley as a convict pining to get married is funny in a scene.
  6. The male cameos: Rahul Dev, Yogi Babu and Sayaji Shinde are there to over-crowd the movie.

Telugu Funda’s take on the Technical Output:

  1. The songs: GV Prakash Kumar’s music is off the charts. OG Sambavam and God Bless U are too boisterous for our sensibilities.
  2. The cinematography: Abinandhan Ramanujam’s work is decent.
  3. The production values: Mythri Movie Makers’ big-ticket Kollywood production scores marks.
  4. The editing: Vijay Velukutty’s department did have a job to do. And the output is not bad.

Telugu Funda’s Analysis:

Gangster-in-exile films typically feature a central character who is displaced from their home turf, often due to betrayal, law enforcement pressure, or internal conflict within their organization. This exile forces them to navigate unfamiliar territory, confront their past, or attempt to reclaim their power. Good Bad Ugly attempts to be in that territory but with a spin on the genre. It’s a fan service film.

It is relatively easy to dissect this film. But it is hard to judge it, given its extreme localness. Fan service films will impress you if you enjoy the references and hat-tips. If not, they won’t make any sense to you. Imagine a Pawan Kalyan film that pays tributes to his chartbusters from Kushi and Badri, and his mannerisms. If PK acted in such a film today, and the Tamil audience watched it, what would the reaction be? Good Bad Ugly is that kind of film.

Can we enjoy Good Bad Ugly as a story? To an extent. It’s somewhat unpredictable and crazed. It’s a bit chaotic and overcrowded, but you can overlook the flaws if you don’t expect anything better from Tamil cinema. As it is, Kollywood’s star vehicles have been desperately dull for many years now. By the industry’s standards, GBU is not bad at all.

Telugu Funda’s Verdict:

Good Bad Ugly plays heavily on Ajith Kumar’s star power, delivering a chaotic and noisy gangster flick that prioritizes fan service over coherent storytelling. The film is not necessarily “bad” by Tamil cinema standards, but it is far from “good” for a wider audience.
