Popular director Ram Gopal Varma is facing legal challenges over controversial content allegedly posted about TDP leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and daughter-in-law Brahmani. The complaint focuses on tweets Varma shared while promoting his film Vyuham.
The complaint accuses him of tampering with pictures of Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, portraying them in an offensive way. Filed under the Information Technology (IT) Act, the case claims these posts harmed their reputation.
Ram Gopal Varma’s Reaction
Varma recently responded, denying any awareness of a specific tweet. “I have posted over a thousand tweets in the past year. There’s no clear basis for this case,” he told ANI. He alleged a conspiracy and criticized media outlets for spreading “all sorts of rumors.”
Investigation and Legal Actions
The case was filed in Maddipadu Police Station of Prakasam district three weeks ago, following a complaint by TDP Mandal Secretary Ramalingam. According to Sub-inspector Siva Ramaiah, the investigation is ongoing. Superintendent of Police AR Damodar confirmed the allegations involve tampering with sensitive pictures.
Court Proceedings and Temporary Relief
Varma sought anticipatory bail in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. On Monday, Justice N. Harinath issued an interim order directing police not to take any immediate action until December 9, when the hearing resumes. Varma defended his actions, citing his freedom of speech under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution.
