Petrol and Diesel Prices Increased After Elections, Fuel Price Hike Comes into Effect

What many had expected has now happened. After remaining stable for nearly eleven weeks, fuel prices have been revised, with petrol and diesel rates increasing once again.

Over the past 12 years, critics of the central government have often alleged a pattern in fuel price adjustments around election periods. According to opposition parties, prices tend to remain unchanged during polling and are revised soon after elections conclude. While the central government has consistently denied any such intent, the latest price revision has once again sparked similar discussions in political circles.

In the recent case, elections in four states and one Union Territory had concluded, and new governments were being formed (except in Assam and Kerala). Within days of the results being announced, oil marketing companies declared a fresh revision in fuel prices. The revised rates came into effect from 6 a.m. on Friday across the country. Petrol and diesel prices were increased by ₹3 per litre.

For the past eleven weeks, fuel prices had remained stable. However, global crude oil prices have reportedly risen due to geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the United States. In many countries worldwide, fuel prices have reportedly increased by 30–45 percent in response to rising crude costs. Compared to that, the recent increase in India is relatively modest, estimated at around 2.8 to 3.5 percent.

Following the ₹3 per litre hike announced by oil companies, consumers in Telugu-speaking states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) are expected to see a higher effective increase approximately ₹3.20 to ₹3.50 per litre due to state-level taxes. Fuel prices in these states are already higher compared to several other parts of the country, with Andhra Pradesh generally recording slightly higher rates than Telangana.
