Vijay’s ‘Surgical Strike’ on Liquor Shops: Orders Closure of Hundreds Across Tamil Nadu

Remember the movie Oke Okkadu directed by S. Shankar? In the film, Arjun Sarja becomes Chief Minister for just one day and transforms the administration with bold decisions. A similar comparison is now being drawn in Tamil Nadu, where actor-turned-politician Vijay has reportedly begun his administration with a major crackdown on liquor outlets.

Soon after assuming office as Chief Minister, Vijay is said to have issued orders targeting hundreds of wine shops across the state. Authorities have reportedly been instructed either to relocate these outlets or shut them down entirely within two weeks. The move is being described as the first major “masterstroke” of his administration.

Liquor sales are one of the biggest sources of revenue for state governments. As alcohol consumption increases, so does the number of liquor shops and the income they generate. Because of this, most governments tend to protect the liquor business. However, Vijay’s government has reportedly chosen a different path, prioritizing public welfare over revenue.

According to reports, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to remove liquor outlets located near educational institutions, places of worship, and major public spaces. Officials have been directed to enforce a strict 500-meter rule, under which liquor shops located within 500 meters of schools, colleges, temples, mosques, churches, and bus stands must either be relocated or shut down immediately.

Under this initiative, around 717 liquor shops across the state have reportedly been identified for closure or relocation. The government has clarified that the licenses of these shops may be cancelled if they fail to comply with the new regulations.

In Tamil Nadu, liquor sales are controlled by the state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation, commonly known as TASMAC. The corporation contributes significantly to the state’s revenue. Despite the potential financial impact, Vijay’s administration appears determined to prioritize public safety, student welfare, and the concerns of devotees visiting religious places.

The decision has reportedly received widespread support from the public, especially from women and local residents who have long complained about liquor shops operating near schools and temples. Social media platforms are also witnessing strong reactions, with several groups praising Vijay as a “people’s Chief Minister.”

Political observers believe this could be just the beginning of broader liquor-control reforms in Tamil Nadu. During his election campaign, Vijay had promised stricter regulations on alcohol sales, and the closure of these 717 shops is being viewed as the first step toward fulfilling that promise.
