Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming Pongal release Jana Nayagan has landed in legal proceedings as its makers moved the Madras High Court over a delay in censor certification. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film is said to be inspired by Balakrishna’s Bhagavanth Kesari, with additional elements woven into the narrative. Pooja Hegde plays the female lead.
Although the film was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) some time ago, the censor certificate is yet to be issued. This delay has prevented theatres from opening advance bookings, prompting the producers to seek judicial intervention. The makers have filed a petition requesting directions for the immediate issuance of the censor certificate.
Industry sources suggest that certain political dialogues in the film may be the reason behind the hold-up. The High Court has taken note of the petition, but the hearing has been adjourned to tomorrow, leaving the situation uncertain and further postponing advance ticket sales.
Jana Nayagan features Bobby Deol as the antagonist, while Mamitha Baiju steps into the role originally played by Sreeleela. The film also stars Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Sunil, Priyamani, and Narain in key supporting roles.
Produced by Venkat K. Narayana under the KVN Productions banner, the film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Jana Nayagan will release in Telugu as Jana Nayakudu and is slated to hit theatres worldwide on January 9, 2026.
