The Congress Government in Karnataka has tabled a bill to form a welfare board for artists that can collect 1-2% additional cess on ticket prices and OTT subscription fees.
The Karnataka Cine and Cultural Activists (Welfare) Bill, 2024 was tabled on July 19th in the Legislative Assembly by H.K. Patil. The board will include members such as the Minister-in-charge, Department of Labour, Additional Chief Secretary/Principal Secretary/Secretary, Department of Labour, Labour Commissioner, and 17 members nominated by the government, including cine workers and others.
The Karnataka Cine and Cultural Activists Welfare Board with the Labour Minister as its chairman will be formed once the bill passes the assembly and becomes an act. The primary functions of the board are: registering and giving ID cards to artists. The renewal period of registration is to be 3 years.
