In a significant development today, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), led a protest demanding the withdrawal of government orders directing the immediate transfer of 100 acres of agricultural university lands, known as ‘Jeevo 55’, located behind the Agro Bio-Diversity Park in Telangana, to the High Court.
The protest was sparked by recent activities at the Agricultural University, where Vice-Chancellor Professor Jayashankar conducted a religious event in the chamber of Chamber Eduta. ABVP state convener Jhansi, addressing the gathering, expressed concerns over the decision to transfer the lands to the High Court, demanding the immediate cancellation of “Jeevo 55”.
The state government had previously allocated these lands for the development of the Agro Bio-Diversity Park, a unique initiative aimed at conducting research and promoting growth in the agricultural sector. The park, affiliated with the Agricultural University, has been conducting various studies and experiments for the past 35 years, focusing on medicine plants, vegetables, and diverse research on forestry.
ABVP, in its opposition, argued that the decision to transfer the lands to the High Court would not only jeopardize the agricultural research and development activities but also hinder the growth of the agricultural sector in Telangana. The student organization emphasized that the lands should be utilized for the benefit of farmers, ensuring research and development to enhance agriculture.
In response to the situation, Professor Jayashankar, the Vice-Chancellor of Agricultural University, led a dharna program in the university today. Addressing the gathering, he voiced concerns over the potential adverse impact on agricultural research and education if the High Court building was constructed in the same location. Professor Jayashankar also highlighted the importance of agricultural research in the region and urged the government to reconsider the decision.
As the protest unfolded, student leaders and activists spoke passionately about the need to protect the agricultural lands and the potential consequences of diverting them for other purposes. State Joint Secretary Manisha, Working Committee Member Prudviraj, Convener Surya Prakash, District Convener Raju, and District Conveners Sai Ram, Hariprasad, among others, actively participated in the demonstration.
The issue took a dramatic turn when police arrested prominent student leaders who were part of the peaceful protest. The arrested leaders were later taken to the police station for further proceedings. The incident added tension to the ongoing agitation, with ABVP leaders condemning the arrests as an attempt to stifle their voices.
In conclusion, the ABVP’s active opposition to the decision to transfer agricultural lands to the High Court highlights the complexities surrounding the utilization of these valuable resources. The situation remains tense, with stakeholders and authorities engaged in discussions to find a resolution that balances the need for agricultural development with the demands of various groups involved.
