A senior DGP-rank officer in Karnataka has landed the state police department in controversy after an alleged video, purportedly showing him in compromising situations with multiple women inside his office while in uniform, surfaced online. The video began circulating widely on social media on Tuesday afternoon after being leaked by unidentified sources.
The officer in question is R. Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police and head of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement. The footage has triggered widespread embarrassment within the police establishment and sparked sharp public reaction.
According to reports, the video allegedly shows Rao engaging in intimate acts with several women inside his office premises. Rao is also the stepfather of actress Ranya Rao, who was arrested in March last year in connection with a gold smuggling case involving Dubai.
Reacting swiftly to the controversy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered a detailed probe into the matter. He stated that strict disciplinary action would be taken if the allegations are proven true, adding that no individual would be spared, irrespective of rank or position.
Following the video’s circulation, Ramachandra Rao reportedly attempted to meet the Home Minister at his residence but was denied an appointment. Speaking to the media later, Rao dismissed the video as fabricated and baseless. He alleged a deliberate attempt to malign his reputation and said he would initiate legal action against those responsible for circulating what he termed as fake content.
A native of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, Ramachandra Rao is due to retire in July this year. He was earlier suspended from service after his stepdaughter’s arrest in March last year but was reinstated in August. The outcome of the probe ordered by the state government is now awaited.
