The Hunt (SonyLIV) – A Chilling Walk Through India’s Darkest Hour.

Nagesh Kukunoor’s The Hunt isn’t your usual binge-watch fare. It doesn’t rely on loud background scores, hero punches, or forced drama. Instead, it quietly pulls you into one of India’s most shocking chapters – the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi – and lets the truth do all the talking.

Set in 1991, the series is a painstakingly detailed procedural that follows the Special Investigation Team as they race against time to uncover the conspiracy and bring the culprits to justice. Amit Sial, as D.R. Karthikeyan, is calm, measured, and fully committed – never flamboyant, never theatrical. He embodies the real-life officer’s resolve without turning it into a caricature of heroism.

Where The Hunt truly shines is in its authenticity. From the clunky typewriters and wired telephones to the fear and uncertainty of the time, everything feels real – like you’ve time-traveled into a tense India still reeling from tragedy. Tamil dialogues are retained, files are dug up by hand, and intelligence gathering is slow but razor-sharp. This isn’t fiction dressed up as fact; this is fact, carefully unwrapped.

The show doesn’t politicize, doesn’t preach, and thankfully, doesn’t glorify violence. It respects the audience’s intelligence, offering a story that’s chilling in its silence and powerful in its restraint.

That said, it’s not a perfect ride. The middle episodes do feel stretched, and if you’re looking for high-octane thrills, you might feel the slow burn a bit too much. But stay with it – because the finale, while understated, lands with a quiet gut-punch.

Final Verdict:

The Hunt is for viewers who want their thrillers served with realism, patience, and depth. It doesn’t scream for attention – it earns it. And when the end credits roll, you’re left with more than entertainment – you’re left with perspective.

Watch it when you’re in the mood for something real, raw, and respectfully crafted.
