Snakes and Ladders Season 1 Review

What does a Netflix Original Stranger Things and Amazon Prime Original Snakes and Ladders have in common? A gang of 4 kids with a girl with a condition minus the alien part with their bicycles. And, ST was set in the era of radio transmitters and so does S&L, but only replaced with retro cell phones. Also, both series have a close person as a cop. More importantly, both have kids behaving and taking the complex decisions like an adult to solve something larger their potency and yet they achieve. That is one hell of an arc!

Vinay, Ragi, Bala, Sandy, Irai are the main kids who drive this crime thriller. The world of Rettamagudu set in 2006 keeps expanding as too many characters and too many motives are introduced to us. There are two thieves, Paari and Blade, chasing side-money after robbing some precious Locket Pendant from Indigenous Art of Museum. There begins the crime and therefore the thrill that doesn’t give too many chills but hooks you to the plotline.

The typical Tom and Jerry chase of criminals searching for Locket Pendant and police searching the criminals and the kids conveniently Tom-and-Jerry-ing everyone in all houses, police and criminals makes Snakes and Ladders a watchable thriller. Kids playing adults, doing more crimes to cover up another ‘innocent’ crime is all a smooth puzzle-set for the writers Kamala Alchemis and Dhivakar Kamal to play with the screenplay. And, I must say, they played well.

There are characters named Bhai, Paneer, Alex, Leo, Rico, all appropriately named in the style of Karthick Subbaraj. The flavorous touch of Karthik Subbaraj as a creative producer of the show can be felt in the crime world of Rettamagudu.

The ambiguous limited revealing of the information, including the names and faces leaves you wondering the potential sequel right upfront, beginning of the series. Writers Kamala Alchemis and Dhivakar Kamal should have taken a bit more care regarding world building and timely revealing of information without frustrating the audience. We understand how important cliffhangers are for showrunners, but the kick of a cliffhanger only comes when it is least expected, but not when you can smell the Season-2 eight-episodes away.

There are still many unanswered questions as we end season one of Snakes and Ladders. Such is the nature of TV Series. It must have looked the same. In that case, Snakes and Ladders had intrigued me for the second season only for the unanswered questions and unexplored characters, except that Snakes and Ladder has very little that makes you desperately wish for a second season.

Snakes and Ladders is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
