Bollywood superstar Salman Khan recently shared his thoughts on the rising popularity of pan-Indian films during the promotions of his upcoming movie Sikandar. The actor expressed concerns over South Indian audiences not supporting Bollywood films, even though Hindi audiences enthusiastically watch South Indian movies.
South Films Dominate Bollywood, But Not the Other Way Around
During the media interaction, Salman highlighted how South Indian blockbusters like Pushpa, RRR, and KGF have drawn massive crowds in Hindi-speaking regions. He pointed out that Bollywood audiences eagerly watch South superstars like Rajinikanth, Allu Arjun, and Ram Charan. However, he observed that South fans rarely show the same interest in Bollywood films.
Salman revealed that South Indian fans warmly recognize him and greet him on the streets. However, he admitted that convincing them to visit theatres for Hindi films remains a challenge. He blamed this imbalance on the strong regional loyalty of South Indian fans, which makes it harder for Bollywood films to succeed there.
Big Budgets Can’t Guarantee Success
The actor stressed that big budgets alone won’t guarantee pan-India success. He stated that Bollywood frequently fails to produce mass-appeal films, unlike South Indian filmmakers who consistently create emotionally powerful, larger-than-life stories that connect with a wider audience.
Salman criticized Bollywood’s flawed financial practices, claiming that over-inflated budgets hurt profitability. He remarked, “We are going totally wrong with our budgets. Once we control that, things will improve.”
Bollywood Needs More Theatres and Better Storytelling
Salman highlighted India’s limited theatre infrastructure as another major issue. He suggested that increasing the number of theatres to 20,000–30,000 could significantly boost Bollywood’s reach and revenue potential.
The actor also emphasized that strong storytelling defines cinema’s true essence. He urged Bollywood filmmakers to prioritize meaningful, emotionally engaging narratives instead of focusing solely on grandeur.
Bollywood Needs Smarter Strategies
In conclusion, Salman called for fresh strategies to bridge the gap between Bollywood and South cinema. He urged filmmakers to create high-quality, mass-oriented films that resonate with audiences across regions. He firmly believes that only strong content can help Bollywood gain equal footing with South Indian films in the pan-India market.
