Robinhood Review : Lacklustre action comedy

Robinhood Review : Lacklustre action comedy

Robinhood, produced by Mythri Movie Makers, is currently showing in theatres. Let’s find out what the film has in store:

Telugu Funda’s reveal of the basic Plot:

Ram (Nithiin), a lone soul with no kin, blossoms into a rogue Robin Hood, a cheeky thief with a heart of gold, pilfering from the plump pockets of the wealthy to sprinkle kindness on the downtrodden. Enter Neera Vasudev (Sreeleela), the dazzling daughter of a pill-pushing magnate, who swoops into India like a monsoon breeze. Ram, ever the trickster, dons the cloak of a private guard, a sly fox fooling the fair maiden. Fate spins a thread binding her to Rudrakonda’s wild, untamed plains. Our hero, struck by destiny’s quirky quill, reshapes his roguish road. Along comes Saamy (Devdatta Nagre), a merciless goon, ready for a showdown in this lawless land’s dusty dance.

Telugu Funda’s take on the Performances:

  1. Nithiin: There has been something off about his energy. Notice his body language in the promotional interviews and events. You will discern that self-doubt has taken over him. The same spills over into his performance in Robinhood.
  2. Sreeleela: She used to be serviceable in songs at the very least. In this film, even this function has been outsourced to, in the case of a song, Ketika Sharma. You can imagine!
  3. Rajendra Prasad and Vennela Kishore: Saviours of many scenes.
  4. The Bag Guys: Devadatta Nagre, Mime Gopi and others resign themselves to stock expressions and stale dialogues.
  5. Others: Sijju, Subhalekha Sudhakar and others justify their limited parts.

Telugu Funda’s take on the Technical Output:

GV Prakash Kumar is Robinhood when it comes to his relation with Telugu cinema. Maybe, he overcharges Telugu producers to buy expensive musical equipment and uses them to perk up his Tamil-language assignments. Or, maybe, he adopts a somewhat run-of-the-mill style for Telugu movies at the behest of his unimanginative directors. Whatever it is, the songs in Robinhood fall flat.

The cinematography is functional. Nowadays, even laymen are able to make out the difference between high-end VFX and low-end green mat shots. Robinhood has some of them for sure.

Telugu Funda’s Analysis:

Robinhood is not an outright disaster. Some scenes involving Rajendra Prasad and Vennela Kishore work just fine. The hilariously incapable security agency run by the former is deployed to add a fairly creative comedy track that stays longer than expected. Vennela Kishore’s character should have been abandoned after the first 20 minutes of the second half. A new comedian, probably the happening Satya, should have been introduced early on.

The tonal shifts are jarring. The bloodshed in Rudrakonda is in sharp contrast to the nature of comedy involving primary characters. In a way, this is reminiscent of the Agnyaathavaasi template. In that film, Pawan Kalyan’s scenes with the two heroines and two of the male characters don’t sit pretty with the serious emotional drama involving Khushboo and Aadhi Pinisetty. Same holds for Robinhood. Whenever the violent villain is around, we wonder what he is even doing in the action comedy.

We can’t expect authenticity in how our orphan-protagonists look in our movies. They look as shiny as they look in their real-life wedding photos. This incredible aesthetic that only Telugu and Hindi cinema is capable of deserves a Baskhar Lifetime Achievement Award.

Everything said, Robinhood is way better than most Nithiin movies in recent years. It is leagues ahead of Macherla Niyojakavargam. It would be a shocker if this film turns out to be a disaster. It would be Tollywood’s Bollywood moment.

Telugu Funda’s Verdict:

Robinhood manages to avoid complete disaster, offering some genuinely funny moments thanks to Rajendra Prasad and Vennela Kishore. However, the film suffers from jarring tonal shifts, inconsistent performances, and a lackluster musical score.
