A recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reveals a disturbing 40% surge in diabetes cases in India over the last four years, surpassing 100 million individuals. This alarming rise has led to an increased prevalence of diabetic foot problems, and complications stemming from nerve and blood vessel damage, resulting in ulcers, infections, and deformities. Tragically, if not addressed promptly and accurately, patients with diabetic foot problems face the grim possibility of leg amputation, with a staggering 50% mortality rate within five years post-amputation.
In response to this urgent situation and recognizing the lack of proper multidisciplinary diabetic foot care and surgical treatments in India, the late Sri Krishnam Raju Uppalapati, in collaboration with Professor Venu Kavarthapu, established the UK India Diabetic Foot Foundation (UKIDFF) in 2022. The foundation aims to provide crucial support to Indian patients with diabetic foot problems through the expertise of a UK-based team led by Professor Venu Kavarthapu.
Understanding the gravity of diabetic foot problems in India, UKIDFF has taken steps to address the healthcare gap. The foundation offers free multidisciplinary care advice to doctors across India, organizes educational events, conducts health camps in various regions, and provides free surgical treatment to eligible patients. The founding trustees of UKIDFF include the late Sri Srinivasa Rao Kavarthapu, Smt. Syamala Uppalapati, and Smt. Ramadevi Kavarthapu.
Coinciding with the birth anniversary of the visionary late Sri Krishnam Raju garu, the inaugural UKIDFF health camp was conducted in Mogaltur on January 20th, at his birthplace. Under the leadership of Professor Venu Kavarthapu and coordination by Smt. Shyamala Uppalapati and Praseedha Uppalapati, a diverse team of diabetic foot specialists and doctors from the UK, UAE, and India participated. The Indian team, representing Apollo Hospital Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad led by Dr. Srinivas Seshabattaru and Dr. Varma group of hospitals in Bhimavaram led by Dr. Varma, performed Diabetic Foot Screening, provided free medicines, offered advice on diabetic foot protection, conducted wound treatment, and provided wound care advice.
This collaborative effort is expected to benefit approximately 1000 patients with diabetic foot problems, emphasizing the significance of early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and improved healthcare for individuals grappling with this critical issue in India.
