The Central Government has approved Rs 46 crore to transform the historic Havelock Bridge in Rajahmundry under the Akhanda Godavari Project. This fresh funding will turn the iconic bridge into a major tourism spot. The authorities are implementing the project through the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investments (SASCI). The initiative will boost tourism and create employment opportunities in the Godavari region.
Massive Plans to Develop Rajahmundry’s Tourism Hub
Officials plan to develop both the Havelock Bridge and the nearby Pushkar Ghat. The Havelock Bridge, which spans 2.9 km across the Godavari River and stands on 56 pillars, once served as a key railway route. It stopped functioning in 1997. Now, the government aims to bring it back to life as a vibrant tourism destination.
Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh described the project as a “game changer” for the region. He emphasized that the makeover will improve the bridge’s visual appeal while attracting businesses and creating jobs for local youth.
IIT Madras Experts Lead Structural Analysis
A team from IIT Madras completed a structural study of the Havelock Bridge, Bridge Lanka, and nearby areas. Authorities are waiting for the final stability report to proceed with construction. District Collector P. Prasanthi confirmed that officials have earmarked 116.97 acres in Bridge Lanka for eco-tourism. She stated that the state government already acquired the Havelock Bridge. The team is now in the process of acquiring another 1,044 square metres of railway land in exchange from railway authorities.
Bridge to Offer Ropeways, Water Sports, Resorts, and More
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlines nine tourism attractions on the Rajahmundry side, such as a ferry terminal, ropeway station, parking area, temple complex, musical fountain, statues, and a floating restaurant.
On the Bridge Lanka side, planners have included adventure sports, a luxury resort, glamping areas, an amusement park, golf course, houseboat pier, camping zones, and shopping spaces surrounded by lush landscaping.
On the Kovvur end, developers will set up a ropeway station, a ferry terminal, a budget resort, a convention center, and indoor-outdoor exhibition areas.
Rajahmundry Enters a New Era of Tourism
The project faced delays for over 30 years, but the Chandrababu Naidu-led government, which returned to power in 2024, revived it with fresh momentum. With strong backing from the Central Government, officials are now working with renewed focus to finish the project without further delays.
This initiative will not only revive a historic landmark but also open the doors for modern tourism in Rajahmundry, bringing economic growth, international attention, and thousands of new jobs.
