The blockbuster Pushpa 2: The Rule has become a massive box-office success, earning over ₹1,500 crore globally. Starring Allu Arjun as a red sanders smuggler, the action drama broke several records and captured audiences worldwide. By day 23 (December 27), the film collected an impressive ₹1,120.10 crore nett in India. Globally, it became the first-ever Indian film to cross ₹1,700 crore, according to its makers.

However, while the fictional tale thrives, the Andhra Pradesh (AP) government struggles to profit from the real-life red sanders trade. Despite multiple international auctions, the state has not sold even a tonne of red sandalwood since the Covid-19 pandemic.

AP’s Red Sanders Dilemma

Red sanders, also known as red sandalwood, is a rare and endangered species found in AP’s Rayalaseema region. Its sale is strictly regulated under international trade laws. However, India received special permission to conduct limited sales with government authorization.

The AP government has conducted 24 international auctions since the 1990s, earning around ₹1,800-1,900 crore—slightly more than Pushpa 2’s earnings. In November-December 2024, AP attempted to sell 905 tonnes of red sanders, but there were no buyers.

Falling Demand for Red Sanders

The Covid-19 pandemic caused a global economic slowdown, reducing demand. China, once the largest buyer, has shown little interest since 2020. Currently, 4,000 tonnes of red sanders remain unsold in high-security depots in Tirupati.

The timber is graded into three categories—A, B, and C. A-grade logs once sold for ₹1-1.5 crore per tonne during the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government’s tenure. Now, their value has dropped to ₹75 lakh per tonne. Despite the slump, officials refuse to lower prices, fearing smugglers might exploit the situation.

Smuggling Persists in Seshachalam Hills

While legal sales struggle, smuggling in Seshachalam Hills continues unabated. The region, known for its biodiversity, remains a hub for illegal activities. The stark contrast between Pushpa 2’s fictional glory and AP’s real-world challenges highlights the complexities of balancing economic needs with environmental conservation.
