Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced on Monday, December 9, the induction of Konidala Naga Babu, brother of Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan, into the state Cabinet. With this move, the Cabinet has reached its maximum capacity of 25 ministers.

Naga Babu’s Political Journey

Naga Babu, also known as Nagendra Babu, is a well-known actor and film producer. He currently serves as the general secretary of Jana Sena Party and played an active role in the party’s campaigns during the recent elections. His political experience stems from years of involvement in party activities alongside his younger brother, Pawan Kalyan.

Naga Babu began his political career with the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), launched by his elder brother Chiranjeevi in 2008. Though PRP struggled in the 2009 elections and later merged with Congress in 2011, Naga Babu continued his journey with Jana Sena, which was formed in 2014.

Jana Sena’s Role in the NDA Coalition

The inclusion of Naga Babu as a minister reflects Jana Sena’s growing importance within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Andhra Pradesh. The ruling NDA has a strong majority in the 175-member Assembly, with 164 seats. The TDP leads the coalition with 135 MLAs, while Jana Sena and BJP contribute 21 and 8 seats, respectively.

Strengthening the Cabinet

With Naga Babu’s induction, Jana Sena now has four ministers in the state Cabinet. The other ministers are Pawan Kalyan, Nadendla Manohar, and Kandula Durgesh. Since Naga Babu is not a member of the Assembly, the government will likely nominate him to the Legislative Council to qualify for the ministerial role.

Strategic Decisions by TDP

Reportedly, TDP had allocated a Rajya Sabha seat to Jana Sena. However, Naga Babu preferred a ministerial position, leading Chandrababu Naidu to accommodate him in the Cabinet. To balance coalition dynamics, TDP offered the Rajya Sabha seat to BJP instead.

This decision underscores TDP’s strategy to maintain strong ties with its allies while addressing Jana Sena’s aspirations. Naga Babu’s inclusion reinforces the coalition’s stability and highlights Jana Sena’s growing influence in Andhra Pradesh politics.
