The sequel to Ritesh Rana’s Mathu Vadalara is an edge-seater that continues the same quirkiness and the laughter continues even after 5 years. Ritesh recreates the same feel and thrill of part-one, especially the music of Kaala Bhairava.
The part one of Mathu Vadalara came off as a surprise sleeper hit when it was released in 2019. Then, the filmmakers knew nothing but the intention to make a different and unique and funny and quirky and also an unguessable edge-seating thriller. After that successful movie, the audience already has expectations from Ritesh Rana. (Therefore, the meta references of this in the teaser). The reason for the underperforming of Happy Birthday (2022) is also the extent of quirkiness Ritesh took. But, this time, Ritesh took meticulous care in writing a sequel to much-loved Mathu Vadalara making it as same as part-one yet different and unique and funny and quirky and also an unguessable edge-seating thriller.
Characters are the core strength.
We have characters continuing from the part-one, Sri Simha Koduri as Babu Mohan, Sathya as Yesudas. And, we also have Vennela Kishore reincarnating as the hero who played Ravi in part-one. This makes it more unclear and even more quirky: what we in-reality saw in part one is not the story, but the movie where the Ravi (drug maker) is the hero? Such meta-references add more eccentric that Ritesh Rana’s characters usually are.
Babu and Yesudas are now in HE Team, along with Nidhi played by Faria Abdullah working under the head Deepa (Rohini). We also see Sunil playing the adamant cop Micheal dressed as the Police of a modern western thriller. As usually, the misery of Babu and Yesu haunts them to make mistakes that again haunt them to stay stuck in the loop to uncover the mystery of who-is-doing-it.
The Laughter Ride with Sathya
Actor Sathya is definitely the show stealer with his delivery timing of one-liners and energetic silliness. Vennela Kishore as Yuwanile satire-ises the star heroe culture in Telugu Film Industry and their fanatic fandom. He sticks to the arrogant dead-pan humour-ed guy that he suits best for. Faria Abdullah as an add-on character to this universe adds value a little bit, just like Sunil’s role that remains an idiosyncratic role.
The Universe of Mathu (Addiction).
Yeah, we might be overdoing the creation of a Cinematic Universe for every filmmaker. But, trust me, Ritesh Rana deserves his own MCU: Mathu Cinematic Universe. Ritesh Rana proves that for the creation of a sequel and potentially an universe, he doesn’t need any cliffhangers to pull the strings. He just needs the lovable entertaining characters that can fit in any Ritesh-style thriller. And, he has them, quite a bunch. His style of thrillers happens when the characters decide to do something illegal and fail miserably at it completely without their knowledge and intervention.
