Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has landed in legal trouble ahead of the release of his upcoming film Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which is slated to hit theatres on March 19, 2026. The controversy stems from his alleged mimicry of Rishab Shetty’s portrayal of Chamundi Devi from Kantara 2 during the International Film Festival of India.
The performance reportedly hurt the sentiments of several Kannadigas, triggering backlash and eventually leading to the filing of an FIR against the actor. Although Ranveer later issued an apology, the issue has now escalated legally.
The complaint alleges that his mimicry disrespected religious sentiments associated with the revered character from the Kantara franchise. Based on the complaint, authorities registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
On February 23, 2026, Ranveer Singh moved the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash the FIR. His legal counsel argued that the act was taken out of context and maintained that there was no intention to offend any religious belief or community. They further contended that criminal proceedings in the matter were unnecessary and unjustified.
However, the High Court declined to grant an urgent hearing on the plea. The bench reportedly observed that celebrity status does not entitle anyone to special consideration. The matter has now been listed for further hearing on February 24, 2026, when the court will decide whether the case should proceed.
The controversy has sparked widespread discussion within the film industry and among audiences in Karnataka, with many closely watching the court’s next move.
