'Kalki 2898 AD': Why were Arri Alexa 65, Arri DNA lenses used?

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is arriving at the cinemas on June 27th. Ahed of its release, curiosity around its technical output has only been on the rise. In his latest interview, cinematographer Djordje Stojiljkovic revealed that particular lenses were used with a vision in mind.

The Arri Alexa 65, which is known for its 6.5K resolution, was used because director Nag Ashwin wanted to capture “intricate, lifelike images suited for the expansive scope intended for an IMAX release”. The cinematographer, speaking to an English-language daily, said that the use of the camera minimized the need for extensive upscaling.

He further added, “Pairing the Alexa 65 with Arri DNA lenses was a deliberate choice to elevate our visual storytelling. These lenses bring a unique character and texture to the imagery, distinguished by their distinctive swirly bokeh. They reproduce cinematic skin tones, prioritizing a natural aesthetic over excessive sharpness.”

Looks like a lot of expertise and deliberation went into mounting the Prabhas-starrer.
