By TeluguFunda / May 5, 2025

The iconic Telugu film Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari is making a grand return to the big screen on May 9, 2025, marking its 35th anniversary. As fans gear up for this nostalgic celebration, one fascinating piece of trivia has reignited excitement: during its original release on May 9, 1990, tickets that officially cost Rs 6 were sold in black for as high as Rs 210. This explosive demand reflected the unmatched frenzy around the film—a craze that is now set to return in both 2D and 3D formats.

Nag Ashwin Leads Digital Remastering for a Visual Treat

A skilled team led by director Nag Ashwin has digitally remastered the film to ensure a visually rich and enhanced viewing experience. By converting the classic into 3D and updating the 2D version, they’ve brought the legendary story to life with modern cinematic polish for today’s audiences.

A Phenomenon That Redefined Telugu Cinema

Director K. Raghavendra Rao and producer C. Ashwini Dutt under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner created a milestone in Telugu cinema. Chiranjeevi played a humble tourist guide, while Sridevi brought grace and charm to her role as Indraja, a celestial being from Indra Lokam. The film also starred celebrated actors like Amrish Puri, Allu Ramalingaiah, Kannada Prabhakar, Brahmanandam, Tanikella Bharani, Rami Reddy, and child artists Baby Shalini and Baby Shamlee.

Cinematographers Ajayan Vincent and K.S. Prakash crafted grand visuals that stunned audiences. The makers didn’t cut corners despite the high budget, making it one of the most expensive Indian films of its time.

Ilaiyaraaja’s Music and Behind-the-Scenes Moments Add to the Magic

Ilaiyaraaja’s timeless music played a major role in the film’s legendary status. Songs like Abbani Theeyani Debba, Priyathama, and Andalalo still hold a special place in fans’ hearts.

Chiranjeevi once revealed that Ilaiyaraaja composed Abbani Theeyani Debba in under a day—starting at 9 a.m., finishing the tune by noon, while lyricist Veturi penned lyrics during lunch, and S.P. Balasubrahmanyam joyfully recorded it soon after. Director Raghavendra Rao designed Andalalo specifically to contrast the divine aura of Sridevi’s character with the grounded human played by Chiranjeevi.

Producer Ashwini Dutt shared an emotional moment when Chiranjeevi shot the high-energy Dinakutta song while running a 106-degree fever, just to meet the tight shooting schedule with Sridevi. He later spent 15 days in the hospital recovering.
