Harikrishna Travels Bus Fire Tragedy: 8 Dead, 18 Injured in Andhra Pradesh

A private bus operated by Harikrishna Travels traveling from Nirmal in Telangana to Nellore caught fire after colliding with a tipper lorry in Andhra Pradesh’s Markapuram district early Thursday, killing at least eight passengers and injuring around 18 others, officials said.

What happened at the spot

The accident occurred near Markapuram around 6:00 am when the Harikrishna Travels bus rammed into a tipper lorry on the Nirmal–Nellore route, police told news outlets. The impact caused the bus to burst into flames, trapping several rear‑seat passengers who were reportedly burnt alive before they could escape. Survivors seated in the front managed to jump out as the fire spread rapidly through the vehicle.

Casualties and rescue

Markapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police Nagraju told media that around eight passengers were charred to death, most of them from the rear section of the bus. About 18–20 injured passengers were rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals, with reports indicating injuries ranging from minor burns to critical conditions. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise as inquiries and medical assessments continue.

Government reaction and probe

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident and conveyed his grief over the deaths and the terrifying scenes of passengers being burnt alive. He spoke to local officials, reviewed the medical care being provided to the injured, and directed a thorough probe into the cause of the collision and the subsequent fire. IT Minister Nara Lokesh also condoled the loss of lives and said the government would extend all possible support to the families of the victims and the injured.

The ill‑fated bus belonged to Harikrishna Travels and was on a Telangana–Andhra Pradesh inter‑state route, plying from Nirmal in Telangana to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, a common corridor for long‑distance private buses. The spot of the accident, near Markapuram in Prakasam district, has seen several past bus and truck mishaps, prompting renewed demands for better road safety, stricter overspeed checks, and improved vehicle maintenance norms.
