By TeluguFunda / October 28, 2025

The landfall process of Cyclone Montha, which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, has officially begun along the Andhra Pradesh coast, according to Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) Managing Director Prakhar Jain.

“Cyclone Montha has commenced landfall. Coastal districts are experiencing heavy rains accompanied by strong gales,” Jain said in an official statement, adding that the system is continuing to strengthen as it nears land.

The cyclone, moving at a speed of 18 km per hour over the past six hours, was located about 560 km off Visakhapatnam as of Monday evening. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Montha is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28, packing winds of 90–100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

Coastal Impact and Warnings

Heavy rainfall and gusty winds have already been reported across Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, and Nellore and Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The IMD has issued red alerts for these regions, warning residents to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas.

In Kakinada, an 8-kilometre stretch of beach road between Kakinada and Uppada has been closed after suffering damage due to high tides and strong winds. In Nellore, several roads are inundated, and in Odisha, the Chilika Lake has turned rough as waves intensified.

In Tamil Nadu, Chennai and surrounding districts including Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram continue to receive widespread rain, while the Koovam River is reportedly in spate. Schools and Anganwadi centres have been shut in Khordha District of Odisha as a precaution.

Preparedness and Government Response

To manage the cyclone impact, the Andhra Pradesh Government has deployed 11 NDRF and 12 SDRF teams, along with Fire Services, swimmers, and emergency rescue boats across vulnerable coastal regions. The RTGS War Room is operating round-the-clock to monitor rainfall, wind speeds, and flooding in real time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday, assuring full support from the Centre. The CM reviewed the situation at the Real Time Governance Centre (RTGS) and instructed officials to ensure “zero-risk” measures in all coastal and low-lying habitations.

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors, avoid beaches and flooded roads, and follow only official updates from APSDMA, IMD, and local administrations.

As Cyclone Montha continues its advance, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to persist across coastal Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu throughout Tuesday.
